Dear Family,
Today is Sabbath, May 20, 2023. It is Day 42; Day 7 of Week 6 in our Count to Pentecost.
Just after the battle between Amalek and the ancient Israelites, Moses built an altar. Then, he introduces us to a new name for God.
Exodus 17:13-16 (13) And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. (14) And the LORD said unto Moses; Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. (15) And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi: (16) For he said; Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
In the King James Version, the name is Jehovahnissi, taken from the Hebrew YHWH nissi. Basically, this name means the Everliving One, My Banner. After God provides triumph in a battle with our enemies, God’s people need to gather around Him to recognize His crucial and decisive involvement. God is our Savior! The Banner signifies His presence. When God raises His Banner, Ensign, or Standard in a battle, the enemy knows God has claimed the people, the land, and the victory!
Isaiah 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him.
A verse in Isaiah reveals that Jesus our Messiah is the true Jehovahnissi.
Isaiah 11:10 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. This Banner has been promised to those who fear God.
Psalm 60:4 Thou hast given a banner to them that fear Thee, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.
May God comfort and encourage us with the beautiful truth attached to this name for God, our Savior!
