Dear Family,

Today is Sabbath, April 10, 2021. This is Day 7 of Week 2 in our Counting toward Pentecost. It is our 14th day of Counting.

Ancient Israel was blessed with the presence of God in the cloud by day and in the fire by night. Yet, they were somewhat oblivious to His presence. The Sabbath is a special time of communing with God, because He has placed His presence in the Sabbath, making it Holy time. Let us NOT be oblivious. Let us take special time today and every Sabbath to fellowship with God’s people, God the Father, and Jesus Christ His Son.

1 John 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Moses knew fellowship with God. It was expressly connected to enjoying “rest.” Notice verse 14 of Exodus 33.

Exodus 33:13-14 (13) Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in Thy sight, shew me now Thy way, that I may know Thee, that I may find grace in Thy sight: and consider that this nation is Thy people. (14) And He said; My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.

Jesus Christ came to give us rest. He wants to dwell with us…share His presence with us. When we have truly repented and given our lives to God, God gives us a special rest. We are freed from the bondage of sin. We are freed from the guilt of our sins. We are freed from the eternal death penalty of sin. However, there is more.

Notice in Matthew 11:28-30 that the word “rest” appears twice. The first time the word rest refers to freedom from the trials and labors of our past. The second time the word rest refers to rest we begin to receive when we take on the easy yoke of God’s service and continue to learn of Him. This rest is an ongoing process and a revelation as we learn and follow. Jesus said, “…and ye shall find rest….”

Matthew 11:28-30 (28) Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (29) Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (30) For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light. And, finally there is an all-encompassing, never-ending rest that we shall enter when our vile bodies are changed from mortal to immortal, from physical to spiritual.

Philippians 3:20-21 (20) For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: (21) Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself.

That is the rest referred to in Hebrews.

Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

Let us celebrate the Sabbath together, in awareness and appreciation of all of the “rest” God has prepared for us.

Dear Family,

Today is Friday, April 9, 2021. This is Day 6 of Week 2 in our Counting toward Pentecost. It is our 13th day of Counting.

From the bitter water at Marah, the ancient Israelites moved on further into the wilderness. They camped at Elim. It was a lush oasis in the middle of the desert wilderness.

Exodus 15:27 And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters.

There is a Scripture in Proverbs that correlates with the experiences in Exodus 15 and 16. God had told Israel to obey Him as He revealed Himself as YHWH Rapha, the Eternal that heals and provides health. Then, as they trusted and followed Him, He led them to a desert oasis. He wanted, then and now, to be trusted and acknowledged as the Source of all good. Also, both then and now, He tied knowledge of how to receive that good always.

Proverbs 3:1-8 (1) My son, forgets not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: (2) For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. (3) Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: (4) So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. (5) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. (7) Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. (8) It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Trusting God and being “not wise in thine own eyes” takes a spirit of humility and an awesome respect for the Almighty, Everliving God. Ancient Israel was not able to sustain such a spirit and attitude to God; yet, being forewarned by Israel’s example, today we can press toward God, praying for this spiritual capacity. It is health to our navel and Marrow to our bones, physically and spiritually.

Dear Family,

Today is Thursday, April 8, 2021. This is Day 5 of Week 2 in our Counting toward Pentecost. It is our 12th day of Counting.

Exodus 19:4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.

What if the ancient Israelites had understood what God was granting them when He placed His presence with them in the fire and cloud? What if they had understood how God was delivering them on “eagles’ wings?” What if they had only understood about the power of prayer and the access God was granting them to His divine presence and power? Would things have been different for them?

Today we can know these things. Life can be different for us. When Israel left Egypt, the Holy Scriptures had not been written, canonized, and delivered to them. Today, we have them. We also have millennia of history. And, we have the gift of God’s calling and His Holy Spirit.

Today, we have the “Good News.” Today we know that God’s master plan of salvation includes every human who will ever live. What God does; He always does with purpose; positive purpose. What ever God gives is good…and only good. There are so many witnesses to these truths. These are beautiful truths that the entire world needs to know; yet, they have been covered over in the darkness of lies about God. However, we can walk in the light.

John 12:35 Then Jesus said unto them; Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

As we go through the wilderness of our life’s journey, we can look forward to different outcomes than ancient Israel. God intends to show us the pitfalls. What is required of us is to be in His presence and walk in the light.

Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Today is Wednesday, April 7, 2021. This is Day 4 of Week 2 in our Counting toward Pentecost. It is our 11th day of Counting.

Exodus 15:22-24 (22) So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. (23) And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore, the name of it was called Marah. (24) And the people murmured against Moses, saying; What shall we drink?

Looking at the situation the ancient Israelites experienced, we may find ourselves very sympathetic towards them. After three days in the wilderness, their supply of drinking water was gone. It is understandable and acceptable that they were disappointed. What is NOT acceptable is their negative response towards God and Moses. The words of their mouth revealed the state of their heart.

Israel had come out of Egypt, but they brought a lot of Egypt with them in their hearts, attitudes, and behaviors. Israel needed to be cleaned up. It was much easier for God to sweeten the water than it was for Him to sweeten up the bitter attitudes in the hearts of the Israelites. God showed Moses what to do for the water.

Exodus 15:25-26 (25) And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, (26) And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

God wanted the Israelites to enjoy good health, not just good water. He used this experience to reveal something about His greatness.

In the New Testament book of James, we find an interesting passage that has a number of elements similar to those in Exodus 15. James discusses the tongue and compares it to a fountain. He asks if a fountain can send forth both sweet and bitter water? We know from other passages that people speak out of the abundance of their hearts. (see James 3:8-16)

God wants us to speak righteous words of peace and to live without bitterness, strife, or envying. He wants us to be healthy and whole, within and without. The story of Marah demonstrates God’s desires and His ability to do great things for His people. When we are willing to leave the bitter, evil ways of our past Egypt behind, only spiritual health awaits us.

Today is Tuesday, April 6, 2021. this is Day 3 of Week 2 in our Counting toward Pentecost. It is our 10th day of Counting.

Tracing the steps of ancient Israel’s journeys outside of Egypt, today we would find them moving in the wilderness on the east side of the Red Sea.

Exodus 15:22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.

The Bible tells us Israel found no water. Now, not having water might be a real problem for some people. However, let us briefly remember the other circumstances that were fresh in Israel’s mind.

They had just been delivered from hard slavery, delivered through massive supernatural occurrences like a river turning to blood, plagues of frogs and lice, plagues of darkness and great hail, and the death of all unprotected firstborn. Supernaturally, the Red Sea opened for their safe passage, then slammed close to wipe out the mightiest army then on the face of the earth. Israel also was enjoying the presence of God in the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night.

In view of these recent circumstances, do you think finding no water was going to be a big problem for Israel? Well, of course, it was no problem to God. But, Israel tended to forget about God’s power and mercy. They tended to jump to ideas of disaster overtaking them in spite of God’s faithfulness. They tended to gripe and complain FIRST.

By the time God called us to repentance, every one of us had experienced God’s miraculous intervention in our lives. Is there any tendency in us to jump to ideas of disaster when we are challenged with a new trial? The enemy of God would have us believe God will neglect us in some way. However, using the striking stories and warnings in the example of ancient Israel, we can quickly move past the lies and doubts created by the enemy.

The solution to each new challenge is to choose to trust God, call out to Him in a humble attitude, and expect His intervention. He will never fail us. He will never leave us or forsake us. God started us on the road to salvation. He has set His heart on saving us. He will complete His part of the task. No enemy can stop Him. And, with Him all things are possible.

May God grant us all the ability to respond the way He wants us to respond to every situation He sends or allows to come into our lives. He is worthy to be trusted!

Dear Family,

Today is Monday, April 5, 2021. This is Day 2 of Week 2 in our Counting toward Pentecost. It is our 9th day of Counting.

As we move through this counting and tracing the activities of ancient Israel, please notice the vast number of times that Israel cried out and God delivered them. Also, notice just how infrequently Israel’s attitude was good. God did not save them out of Egypt because they had repented in any way. He saved them according to His will and for His name’s sake. He did it as a witness to other nations that He is God!

From this perspective where we see Israel’s “poor” example, one overwhelming lesson is regarding God’s goodness. In this story we discover the depths of God’s grace. He demonstrated restraint, patience, forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, generosity, and many other aspects of His divine nature when He dealt with Israel.

There is no way we can come to the conclusion that Israel deserved any of God’s mercies, yet, God poured out His mercy over and over. Grace! Israel received God’s grace!

The pure truth is God has prepared the entire family of man to received God’s grace. We learn of it in John 3:16 and in other Scriptures like 2 Peter 3:9.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

As part of the Church today, we need to realize we are recipients of even greater measures of God’s grace than ancient Israel received. God has given us life and numerous talents and abilities. He has watched over us, protecting us and bringing us to a place where He has called us to repentance. He has forgiven us and granted us the gift of His Holy Spirit. He is placing His divine nature within us, daily teaching us and fellowshipping with us. Now, that’s GRACE!

Truly, God does none of this because we deserve His favor in any way. We have these blessings because He is a determined GRACIOUS God!

We are truly a blessed people. Let us strive to really get our minds around this kind of perspective about Who and What God is as He deals with us. God did not fail ancient Israel. He will not fail us. All of us who will put our trust in Him will be delivered!

Dear Family,

Today is Sunday, April 4, 2021. This is Day 1 of Week 2 in our Counting toward Pentecost. It is our 8th day of Counting.

Today, as we trace the journey of the Israelites out of Egypt, let us pause as they did and give God thanks for ALL that God is, and ALL that He does. We find in Exodus 15 an outstanding example of a praising and thanking God for deliverance. It is one of the songs of Moses referred to in the Bible. The first song of Moses is found in Exodus 15 while the second song of Moses is in Deuteronomy 32. These songs are referred to again in the book of Revelation (3:1-4). Clearly, they are important to God’s people throughout past history and future prophecy.

Let us all take time to read the entire song of Moses in Exodus 15 and praise and thank God along with Moses and the ancient Israelites.

Exodus 15:1-19 (1) Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. (2) The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him. (3) The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name. (4) Pharaoh’s chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea. (5) The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone. (6) Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. (7) And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble. (8) And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea. (9) The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them. (10) Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters. (11) Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? (12) Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them. (13) Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation. (14) The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina. (15) Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away. (16) Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased. (17) Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O LORD, which thy hands have established. (18) The LORD shall reign for ever and ever. (19) For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.

If Moses, the leader, the statesmen, the worker of miracles, the 80-year-old, former General of Egypt’s armies, can lead a praise and worship of God, then, let us participate with our whole hearts in singing a song about our deliverance unto the LORD.

Dear Family,

Today is Monday, April 6, 2026. Today is Day 2 of Week 1 in our Count to Pentecost.

As we begin another year of Counting to Pentecost, these daily write-ups will focus on the life of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We will not necessarily follow a chronological order.

It is clear in scripture that Jesus was a Jew and so were most of His early followers. Even though Jesus had a short ministry and a short human life of about 33 years, His life as a Human Being is a central issue in the work God did by Him and through Him.

The Bible gives two lines of genealogy for Jesus. One line was a legal line through Joseph, the husband of Mary, that the Jewish populace would have thought of as Jesus’ father (Luke 3). Yet, Jesus’ bloodline goes through Mary’s genealogy that is recorded in the book of Matthew. Correct Jewish genealogy was very important to the Jews. And, it was very unusual for genealogies to be counted through the mother; however, the virgin birth (Isaiah 7:13) was extremely unusual. Clearly, the Bible shows Jesus was a Human Jew.

As we begin this focus on Jesus as we Count to Pentecost, what is most important to always remember is that Jesus was truly a flesh and blood and bone Human Being. And, His Father was Almighty God. Both of those truths are foundational and vital to our salvation. Those truths set the stage for all of the work Jesus accomplished for our salvation. He finished the work God had sent Him to do as a Human Being through the power of God’s Holy Spirit.

John 3:34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.

As a Jew, Jesus knew the Jewish traditions and legal requirements very well. He was very aware that no Jewish tradition and no animal sacrifice would suffice and fit God’s requirement. Jesus never broke God’s law and became the Perfect Sacrifice God’s righteous judgment required as the penalty for sin. And, only as a Human Being, living the Perfect and righteous life, could this penalty be paid.

While Jesus walked as a human, He participated in certain activities that many Jews of His day observed. And yet, He observed all of God’s commandments, making a clear distinction between Jewish tradition and God’s law. His teachings and His approach to Jewish tradition brought Him into open conflict with the religious leaders of His day. The leaders saw Him as something of a rebel Rabbi; and, at His trial, the Jews accused Him of rebellion against Caesar. Jesus was put to death by the hands of the Romans, but the Jewish religious hierarchy and the Jewish populace they worked up against Jesus, were largely responsible of His crucifixion.

One of most the astounding truths about Jesus was that He knew He became Human to die for mankind. His death was not a surprise. Jesus proved Himself to be the willing Sacrifice as He submitted to God’s will.

Hebrews 10:4-7 (4) For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. (5) Wherefore when He cometh into the world, He saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared Me: (6) In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. (7) Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of Me,) to do Thy will, O God.

Dear Family,

Today is Sabbath, April 3, 2021. This is Day 7 of Week 1 in our Counting toward Pentecost. Today is also the Last Day of Unleavened Bread.

It was on the Last Day of Unleavened Bread several thousand years ago that God finally brought ancient Israel completely out of Egypt. Although the Israelites walked out on their own two feet, clearly, they were not able to free themselves from Egypt. That was God’s job. And, God was more than capable of all the additional mighty miracles required to complete the job.

As the massive group of people moved toward the Red Sea, they became aware they were being pursued by Pharaoh and his massive army of chariots and horsemen. Of course, being typical Israelites, they panicked and began to criticize God’s process of salvation.

Exodus 14:9-12 (9) But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon. (10) And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. (11) And they said unto Moses; Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? Wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? (12) Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying; Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.

As true Believers we want to be very careful to avoid all of the mistakes that Israel made. God recorded many of the events and Israel’s weaknesses to warn us, to benefit us, and to keep us on track with God’s plans and purposes.

Psalm 106:7-12 (7) Our fathers understood not Thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of Thy mercies; but provoked Him at the sea, even at the Red sea. (8) Nevertheless, He saved them for His name’s sake, that He might make His mighty power to be known. (9) He rebuked the Red Sea also, and it was dried up: so, He led them through the depths, as through the wilderness. (10) And He saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. (11) And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left. (12) Then believed they His words; they sang His praise.

Israel did not understand what God was doing in Egypt. Let each of us pray God will grant us understanding. And, let each of us pray we remain steadfast and faithful during the time that any specific understanding may be delayed for a season of our lives. All Israel had to do was stand still and see the salvation of the LORD. The 14th chapter of Exodus brings the story of the Exodus to a close. Israel was saved, God’s name was glorified, and the enemies from Egypt were destroyed. God does the same for us today.

Dear Family,

Today is Friday, April 2, 2021. This is Day 6 of Week 1 in our Counting toward Pentecost.

Looking back into ancient history on this 6th day of the first week, we find the children of Israel being brought out of Egyptian slavery. Yet, they are still within the boundaries of Egypt. The Bible says they journeyed from Ramses to Succoth.

Israel started out on their journey after the Passover and a time of spoiling the Egyptians. They were a motley bunch, hundreds of thousands of Israelites, with all of their “stuff” and their animals, as well as a “mixed multitude” of people; perhaps many of them Egyptians ready to leave their homeland, now devastated by the 10 plagues. Yet, their diverse grouping was carried out in an orderly fashion. The Children of Israel were not fleeing from Egypt like some kind of mob. Even the archaic language of the King James Version reveals structure in the movement of the group.

Exodus 13:18 But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt. While Israel walked toward their crossing at the Red Sea, Pharaoh was reconsidering his decisions to let Israel go.

Exodus 14:5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said; Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us?

Prior to Israel’s being totally out of Egypt, there was to be one more major attempt from the enemy to subdue Israel. This was all a part of God’s Plan to permanently deal with the enemy and to make His name known throughout the earth.

Romans 9:17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew My power in thee, and that My name might be declared throughout all the earth.

God bless you richly! He knows how to deliver His people!
