Count to 50 for Pentecost 2020

Day 30, Day 2 of Week 5 – Monday, May 11, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Monday, May 11, 2020; and, it is Day 30 in our Count to Pentecost.  This is Day 2 of week 5.

God told Moses He intended to test (or prove) Israel to determine whether they would walk in God’s law or not, by commanding them to gather on the sixth day of each week, twice as much “bread from heaven” as they were allowed to gather on the first five days of each week.

Exodus 16:4(B) that I may prove them, whether they will walk in My law, or no.

It was a simple and direct commandment God gave them.  And, the explanation of exactly what, how, and when “to gather” versus “not to gather” was reinforced each week by divine intervention.  Supernaturally, the bread would spoil if kept overnight on any of the week days except for the sixth, but be completely fresh when it was kept overnight on the sixth day for the seventh day’s food.  Obviously, the question is, if Israel wasn’t going to keep this command, how could God know they would obey His other commands?

During creation week, according to the first chapters of Genesis, the Sabbath was the first full day Adam and Eve lived.  The Genesis account shows us that God had created them and placed them in the Garden in Eden during the daylight portion of the sixth day.  God then rested and made the seventh day HOLY!

Genesis 2:1-3 (1) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. (2) And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.  (3) And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made.

In Exodus 16:23, we find the first reference to the seventh day being called the Sabbath in the King James Version of the Bible.  This chapter also ties in “rest” with the seventh day Sabbath and refers to the rest as “the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the LORD.”

Exodus 16:23 And He said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

Later, God incorporated His seventh day command into the Covenant He made with ancient Israel at Sinai.  Prior to the Old Covenant, the seventh day rest (Sabbath) was a test commandment.  It has continued to be so through the millennia.

Obviously, the Sabbath is part of the 10 Commandments and the Old Covenant.  However, its being “holy unto the LORD” continues to be crucial to all of God’s people for today and for as long as there is man, because the Sabbath was made for man.  And, we know that everything God does, He does with purpose.  Let us learn from ancient Israel regarding God’s Sabbath test for His people.

Day 29, Day 1 of Week 5 – Sunday, May 10, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Sunday, May 10, 2020.  It is Day 29 in our Count to Pentecost.  This is Day 1 of week 5.

Exodus 16:4 Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in My law, or no.

“Rain bread from heaven for you!”  Exodus 16 contains a wonderful account that illustrates a unique characteristic of God.  He announced that He was about to do something that no one had ever seen or heard of.  In fact, perhaps it had never even entered into any person’s mind.  Who but God would have ever thought of such a thing?

That’s Who God is!  He is the Source.  Our imaginations are far short of God’s creative “genius.”  All mankind can do is “change” the raw materials God has already created when we “create.”  We can only rearrange, or put together, or manipulate (in numerous ways) the resources God has already provided for us.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (8) For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD.  (9) For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written (Isaiah 64:4), Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love Him.

We do not think like He thinks.  Aren’t we glad?  God always has something new.  And, it is always good for us!

Day 28, Day 7 of Week 4 – Sabbath, May 9, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Sabbath, May 9, 2020.  It is Day 28 in our Count to Pentecost.  This is Day 7 of week 4.

Exodus 16 describes God’s revalidation of the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath.  Instead of punishing ancient Israel for their grumbling and complaining, God sent blessings from heaven, one was the reconfirmation of the seventh day Sabbath.

From the very beginning of “man,” God had created the seventh day and made it holy.  It was the finale of His physical creation during that first week.

Genesis 2:1-4 (1) Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.  (2) And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.  (3) And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.  (4) These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,

Many who do not understand the blessing of the Sabbath or its prophetic significance for mankind like to point out that no where in the book of Genesis does the word Sabbath appear; however, we know God made it for all of mankind.  Jesus said so!

Mark 2:27 And He said unto them, The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

The Sabbath is a wonderful time for fellowship with God and His people.  It is a time to rejoice and enjoy!

1 John 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ.

Day 27, Day 6 of Week 4 – Friday, May 27, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Friday, May 8, 2020; and, it is Day 27 in our Count to Pentecost.  This is Day 6 of week 4.

Have you ever wondered about the expectations of the ancient Israelites?  Just what did they expect?  Their expectations must have been quite out of line with God’s plan.

God intended one set of events, and, Israel must have had their own agenda.  And, clearly, they did not want to do without, even briefly.  And, clearly, they did not want to humble themselves to ask God for anything.  They were a grumbling bunch.  Consider the following verses.

Exodus 16:1-2 (1) And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.  (2) And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:

Perhaps the people could not see accusing God directly; however, they had no problem criticizing Him indirectly by complaining about Moses and Aaron.  They had already done this at Marah.

Exodus 15:24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, what shall we drink?

This complaint against Moses and Aaron was clearly understood by God and His servants.  The murmuring was against God.  Compare the two verses in Exodus 16.

Exodus 16:2, 8(B) (2) And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: (8b) for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against Him: and what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.

They could not fool God.  No one can.  We are directed to cease from all murmuring and complaining.  It’s hard, I know because we are still vulnerable human beings; and, God wants His Spirit, not a complaining one, to lead us.

Philippians 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings.

David recognized the evil in what he had done in the “matter of Uriah.”  Yes, it affected humans, but David knew something else very special about how God views sin.

Psalm 51:4(A)Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Thy sight:
David knew sin was against God.  Murmurings and disputings are, also.

Day 26, Day 5 of Week 4 – Thursday, May 7, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Thursday, May 7, 2020, Day 26 in our Counting toward Pentecost. This is the 5th day of Week 4.

What lessons can we learn as we examine possible purposes for God’s providing daily manna from heaven to Israel?

Surely, God had chosen this nation of people.  They were a family grown big.  They were a family whose” fathers,” Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were men of faith.  God had made tremendous promises to Abraham and reconfirmed them through both Isaac and Jacob.  God never changed His mind and never chose another nation.

Today, God still loves that physical nation and will bring them back to a very special place with Him even though Abraham’s physical descendants proved to be very disloyal to the God of Abraham.  However, in these times of the Church of God, the Bride of Christ, God has chosen a nation of spiritual descendants.  He calls them Abraham’s seed.  He has chosen to make us spiritual Israel, regardless of bloodlines or any physical DNA.

We are made one through God’s Spirit.  We are made one by partaking of the Bread of Life.  And, we need to eat of that Bread on a daily basis.  It is provided in small amounts, bit by bit from heaven.

According to verses in John 6, manna was a type of Jesus Christ.  Jesus called Himself the Bread of Life multiple times.

John 6:33, 35, 48, 51 (33) For the bread of God is He which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.  (35) And Jesus said unto them I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst.  (48) I am that bread of life.   (51) I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Manna was given daily so Israel would learn to trust God’s desire and ability to provide for His people.  Jesus said we are to pray about our food daily, “Give us this day our daily bread.”  And, He told His followers to, “Labor not for the meat that perisheth…” (John 6:27).  Today, we can eat of Bread that never perishes.

Let us realize the implications of eating daily of Jesus, the True Bread of Life.   What are some of those implications?  Among others things, eating of Jesus, Who is also known as the Word, means daily internalizing God’s food, His Word.  This will bring us into God’s presence more consistently.  And, when we abide in Him, we will bring forth fruit that glorifies God.

John 15:7-8 (7) If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. (8) Herein is My Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be My disciples.

Just imagine what it would mean in our lives to always receive what we ask God for!  Brethren, are we eating of this spiritual Bread daily?

May God bless you as you eat the Bread He has provided!

Day 25, Day 4 of Week 4 – Wednesday, May 6, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Wednesday, May 6, 2020, Day 25 in our Counting toward Pentecost, and we are halfway through. This is the 4th day of Week 4.

During this 4th week of the journey to Mt. Sinai, let us stop and examine the murmuring and complaining of the Israelites.  Here are a few provocative questions to consider in determining the reasonableness of their grumblings and criticisms.

First, did Israel level blame at human leaders who had truly failed them? Or, did they complain about those people falsely?

Second, did they correctly describe what they were suffering and what they suffered in Egypt? Or, did they accuse falsely by mixing up the true details with exaggerations and wrong focus?

Next, did Israel have reason; even recent proof; to believe God would take care of them in miraculous ways? Or, did Israel complain without having any actual or accurate reasons to believe God would not take care of them?

Finally, did they disregard the Source Who had led them into the situations?  And, did they avoid praying and thus neglect to acknowledge God’s involvement?

When we read the Scriptures and mull over the answers to these questions, we realize Israel’s utter foolishness.  Throughout the journey to Sinai and on to Canaan, they continued this same sort of wicked behavior.  They reacted to the promptings of flesh that was being agitated by God’s enemy.  They possessed hearts of unbelief.  These are sobering thoughts, and we have reason to be concerned about avoiding such unbelief and the resultant sinful behavior.  Let us take the warning seriously, praying for ourselves and our Brethren.

Hebrews 3:12,19; 4:6,11 (12) Take heed, brethren, lest here by in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.  (19) So, we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.  (4:6) Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief.  (11) let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

Believing God is paramount!  It is an essential element in our working out our own salvation with fear and trembling.  God can do anything, and He will do whatever is necessary when we go to God, believing and trusting Him.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

Philippians 2:12b …work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Matthew 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them.

What a fantastic God we serve.  May God bless you by multiplying your faith in Him!

Day 24, Day 3 of Week 4 – Tuesday, May 5, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Tuesday, May 5, 2020, Day 24 in our Counting toward Pentecost.  This is the 3rd day of Week 4.

In the middle of a massive rocky wilderness God provided a small, unusual food for Israel.  They called it manna, meaning, “what is it,” because of its uniqueness.  It was “a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground” (Exodus 16:14b).  We can just imagine that it must have been a truly nutritious food.  Through the details of the story we see that God had several purposes for giving Israel this food.

The first purpose was to feed God’s hungry people.  God sent specific instructions along with the generous amount of food.  They were to gather just enough of it for each person in their family every morning.  It was to last all day and not be kept overnight.  It also did not continue to last on the ground.  It melted in the sun.

Exodus 16:16 This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.

Exodus 16:19 And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

Exodus 16:21 And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

Part of God’s miracle with this supernaturally supplied food was the fact that everyone had enough.

Exodus 16:17-18 (17) And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.  (18) And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

Another important purpose for God’s providing food every morning was to test Israel’s obedience. One obvious disobedience was holding manna over until the next morning.

Exodus 16:20 Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.

By now there were many instances of Israel’s self-will, presumption, and outright disobedience.   Still, God continued to work with them.  We can be thankful that our God is a God of great and tender mercies.  Let us join with all who will agree with the words of Psalm 118:1-4.

Psalm 118:1-4 (1) O give thanks unto the LORD; for He is good: because His mercy endureth forever.  (2) Let Israel now say, that His mercy endureth forever.  (3) Let the house of Aaron now say, that His mercy endureth forever.  (4) Let them now that fear the LORD say, that His mercy endureth forever.

Ancient Israel may never have realized the extent of God’s mercy, but we can.  May God bless each of us that we rejoice before Him, love His salvation, and continually offer Him thanksgiving and praise, saying, “The LORD be magnified” (Psalm 40:16).

Day 23, Day 2 of Week 4 – Monday, May 4, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Monday, May 4, 2020, Day 23 in our counting toward Pentecost.  This is the 2nd day of Week 4.

When the Israelites murmured and complained against Aaron and Moses, it was clear to God and to Moses that the complaints were really directed against God.  Moses shows this in the last part of Exodus 16:8 …your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.

Look at the scriptures carefully and notice that God surely had the manna in mind to give Israel all the time.  He knew their supplies from Egypt would run out.  Providing food from heaven on a daily basis had to be His plan all along.

One of the crucial reasons God wanted to rain bread from heaven was to prove the Israelites.  He wanted to see if they would walk in His law.

Exodus 16:4 Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you: and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or no.

God wanted Israel to be dependent upon Him DAILY!  It is a matter of building their faith.  His provisions of food were obviously supernatural.  In addition to the daily manna, bread from heaven, God sent quail.  And, while quail may have been native to the area, the amount of quail God sent was completely unprecedented in the natural world.  The quail piled up two cubits high (somewhere between two and three feet high).

Exodus 16:13 And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.

Numbers 11:31-32 (31) And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day’s journey on this side, and as it were a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth. (32) And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

Can we learn to trust God daily?  Jesus told us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”  There is an important lesson here.  God bless us with the eyes to see and the hearts to respond to His daily care.

Day 22, Day 1 of Week 4 – Sunday, May 3, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Sunday, May 3, 2020, Day 22 in our Counting toward Pentecost.  This is the 1st day of Week 4.  It has been called the Week of the Manna.

The story of Israel’s experiences during much of this 4th week is found in Exodus 16.  Although it is often referred to as the week of manna, it was a week of many happenings.  Along with the gift of manna, God brought special notice to the Sabbath day, and He gave quail to Israel.  There are so many lessons in this week of Counting toward Pentecost.  We will be able to cover only a few of them.

Exodus 16:1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

Notice the ridiculous and severe accusations Israel hurled at God and His servants, Moses and Aaron.

Exodus 16:2-3 (2) And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:  (3) And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger [emphasis ours].

Let us remember who the accuser of the brethren is (Revelation 12:10)!  Israel was acting on impulses and attitudes from God’s enemy.   Israel became physically hungry and afraid.  The devil often uses such physical and emotional issues to turn people from God.  Yet, God was completely capable and faithful.  He had already provided Israel with ample proof that He would take care of them.  Who did they choose to believe?

During the New Testament era of God’s plan, we know a great deal about the accusing and destructive ways of God’s enemy.  We realize that our battles are spiritual, and the ultimate enemy is not flesh and blood.  We are not ignorant of his devices.  And, we can be armed against those tactics.

Ephesians 6:11-13 (11) Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  (12) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  (13) Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

2 Corinthians 2:11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

We prepare the horse for battle, but God provides the victory (Proverbs 21:31).  May God bless us to see clearly the spiritual battle lines and give us complete triumph as we overcome to the end.

Day 21, Day 7 of Week 3 – Sabbath, May 2, 2020

Dear Family,

Today is Sabbath, May 2, 2020, Day 21 in our Counting toward Pentecost.  This is the 7th day of Week 3.  Today we end the Week of Elim.

The Church in Pergamos was the third one of seven mentioned in Revelation 2 and 3. The word pergamos is from a Greek word meaning fortified with its root being the word purgos meaning a tower or castle.

Pergamos was a Church filled with difficulty.  Difficulties included dwelling where Satan’s seat is, the doctrine of Balaam, and the doctrine of the Nicolaitans.

While the Smyrna Church was the persecuted Church that underwent severe persecution, even to death, the Pergamos Church may also have had a period of martyrdom.

Revelation 2:13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

They also suffered stumbling blocks, being taught to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.  These were serious spiritual errors that existed.  Yet, it appears there were various members who had not all given over to the errors.

Revelation 2:14-15 (14) But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.  (15) So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.

Believers at Pergamos were told to repent.  Apparently, Pergamos needed to hold onto the Word of God.  When Believers hold on to the Word of God which is a two-edged sword, they are better able to withstand heresies, dangerous doctrine, and various stumbling blocks.  They were warned that Christ would come quickly with His sword.

Revelation 2:12, 16 (12) And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges.  (16) Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

Consider a few of Satan’s tactics hurled against the first three Churches for a moment.

In Ephesus, Believers abandoned first love.  Brethren, what makes love cool?  Is it not iniquity?  Did Satan encircle Believers with tremendous evil in the early stages of God’s Church? Stories about the first century and the Roman Empire’s debauchery are legend.  Believers were surrounded by evil of all sorts. Yet, God’s Church survived!

In Smyrna, Believers were tortured and martyred.  When tactics like surrounding people in evil fail to stamp out true Believers, they were viciously attacked physically.  Yet, Satan’s tactics were foiled again.  God’s Church survived!  In fact, the Believers who were faithful during such tribulation are assured of sharing in the great glory of God. They have a crown of life (Revelation 2:10).

Romans 8:17(b) if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.

In Pergamos, Satan used other tactics.  He attacked from within.  Powerful false doctrines were introduced and took hold.  Satan instigated tactics that had worked for him before as in the example of Balaam and Balac. The story is found in Numbers 22, 23, 24, 25.  Balaam was a man who claimed a relationship with the LORD.  Because he desired “the wages of unrighteousness” (2 Peter 2:15), he tried to curse Israel, but when he could not, he taught Balac to subvert them.  Eventually, Israel was lured into fornication and idolatry.  Then, God sent a plague among those who sinned.

Some in the New Testament Church in Pergamos were caught up in Satan’s stumbling block tactics. They also involved themselves in the doctrine of the Nicolaitans which God HATES.  Some have said this is a doctrine of St. Nick or Santa Claus.

Others have said this doctrine is one that teaches free access to continue in unrestrained acts of sin because they are completely covered by Jesus; sacrifice.  Consider, however, that this explanation of the doctrine of the Nicolaitans would produce basically the same outcome as the doctrine of Balaam and his stumbling blocks.

Still others have described this doctrine based on the meaning of the word.  The root of the word Nicolaitans is from the Greek nikao which means to overcome or conquer. And, laos means the people.  This explanation of the doctrine indicates an overcoming of the people by those who would prevail over them.  In essence, it may mean the creation of a clerical system that eventually became a church hierarchy that lorded it over the people.  History does show that such events did occur in a number of ways.

Apparently, this doctrine of Nicolaitans was attempting to make inroads in the Ephesus Church.  Remember they were commended because “thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate” (Revelation 2:6).  Remember that Satan was so comfortable in Pergamos that he dwelled there (Revelation 2:13).  His “seat” was there.

Chief among these historical appearances of a clergy overtaking the laity is what happened in the Catholic Church.  This religious movement substituted the clergy and the pope for the Headship of Jesus Christ.  When it finally prevailed by building an effective hierarchy among the priests or ministry, the doors were wide open to taking over “Christianity” completely.   Any and all doctrines could easily be changed.  Who could resist?  To resist was tantamount to disobeying Christ.

Whatever doctrine is actually being meant by God as Nicolaitan, God hates it; and, so should we. All three of the possible explanations I have provided show dangerous and wrong doctrine.  As we move toward Pentecost, let us not be caught up in any obvious errors.  And, let us pray earnestly, that we will not succumb to any of Satan’s tactics – old or new.   God has already provided what we need for victory!

God bless you with awareness of His presence and power in your life.
